Fundamentalist? well, if you look at it that way...

It has recently come to my attention that some of the curbie crowd/mercury militia refer to people such as myself and other anti cure autistics & our allies (you know, the 'neurodiverse', whatever the hell they think that means) have been referring to us as "autistic fundamentalists".

Of course, the first thing that springs to mind when I hear the word 'fundamentalist' is religion taken to the extreme, which in my experience is kind of frightening. Sorry any Bible Christians, that's just the connotation it has for me. I'm sure words that describe me make you cringe too.

So I was kind of freaking out over a number of things-having to pack for a wedding, needing to find a new gym since my old one lied to me about summer class availability, private lesson availability, oh-and that I'd be allowed to compete this year. Ha. Not for them. Effing liars, if they don't like that I'm odd they can look at that little form with 4 pages that I filled out that has "AUTISM, *ask me* if you have questions" in the section asking if there was anything I needed to know. Hard work doesn't matter. An adult being quirky and creepy in a leotard according to a spoiled 10 yer old DOES. Anyway. That's another post, even if it does tie in with this:

While I was laughing about being called a fundamentalist, my search engine diety roommate found a different view of fundamentalism:

"Each child should have the fundamental right, a constitutional right, whether it's a tribal constitutional right, federal or state constitutional right. It's time we made our constitutions have our children's rights in them so they can engage in those experiences that he or she is most anxious to explore, because it is having the right to choose that is truly indigenous to the democratic concept."
-- David Wilkins, Lumbee Tribe"

Wise words, huh? I think this should extend to all humans though, not just children. Those of us who are treated like children. Those of us who are treated as incapable. Those of us who are treated like typical adults. We all have a fundamental RIGHT to choice. To pursue that which we wish to pursue. To have choices in every day life. To not be discriminated against because we are a minority in whatever way (racial, religious, ability/disability, cultural, etcetera). To not be excluded just because we make a couple people a little uncomfortable.

If this is fundamentalism, replacing "child" with "human" or "autistic" (since everyone gets this about typical adults for some reason...) then damn right I am an autistic fundamentalist. I am strong in my CHOICE to make the world a better place for autistics-for us to be granted the same fundamental rights as everyone else in this country.

This is an insult that I, for one, am glad to have applied to me. Fundamentally autistic. Yes.

If the term is going to be applied to any subgroup of the autism community, I'd find a group that disparages science in favor of some kind of faith ("All autism is mercury poisoning"), believes in an infallible text ("Evidence of Harm"), believes it is persecuted (by BigPharma), has a number of messiahs who can't be questioned no matter what (Rollens, Kirby, JB Handley, the Geiers), that their cause has a cosmic importance, and so on.

Please do not compare Fundamentalism to extremism in religion, fundementalism is religion returned to its roots or foundations, it is radical

"Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it? Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof; When the morning stars sang together , and all the sons of God shouted for joy?" Job 38:4-7

It has nothing to do with the demon possessed Handleys et al

(bloody word verification is screwing this dyslexic up today)

I think of "fundamentals" in the sense of certain basic core things, tenets, beliefs, ideas. And I would say, what you write here something basic and essential we all need to hear.

hey Kassi.....
good post. as usual. here is what I think (aka my two cents)

the word fundamental, with the two different endings, is being used two different ways. One we are, and one we are not, as autistics. We are fundamentally, essentially, autistic. That is just who and what and how we are.
The fundamentalists, on the other hand, are the curebies, actually! They are madly blindly believing that autistic minds cannot be compatible with society and therefore we should be cured. This we are not. We are fundamentally against the fundamentalists! I hope I haven't been Captain Obvious in my comment......

here is my blog link if you want to have a look...I have a lot of work to do on it....

If I'm to be a Fundie Autie without my consent to application of the label, I suppose it is better than the other conotation might have. Keep your 'cure' out of my brain.

I say we are the real "progressives" in the matter of curing autism. Instead of barbaric practices to try to force everyone into a nice neat normality, we accept and encourage true diversity, which bounds beyond racial and traditional ethnic diversity. Allowing people to think how they were born thinking is no practice akin to bible-beating. It is a truly novel practice in that for centuries, even millenia, society has attempted to have a mainstream way of being as the only acceptable way of being. We're the new rebels, and we think outside the box--which is three dimensional.

First I just want to say that there are no words that describe you that would make me cringe, even if the reverse is not true for you.

Second, I want to say that I enjoyed your overall post and find the term "fundamentally autistic" to be excellent, a phrase with a lot of kick and potential to be used in a more widespread way.

Third, I have to agree with Larry: "Fundamentalism" is a belief system. "Extremism" (usually based on fundamentalist beliefs, whether religious, political, or something else) is an action or set of actions, which often negate the very belief systems upon which they are based. So I think the part you find "frightening" is the part where people would take certain parts of the Bible as a call to action that affects others negatively, such as trying to pass the Marriage Protection Act or someone mowing down an obstetrician in an office that performs abortions.

I consider myself to be a "Bible Christian," as you put it (and I did like that phrase; I thought it was respectful), but actually I call myself a "Biblist" because I don't go to church for various reasons, and even if I could go I would end up having a problem with something. I always do (and I've been told that, too).

There's no need for an apology to *this* particular Bible Christian, because I think you were referring to something a little different from fundamentalism.

I know I'm dating myself here, but does anyone else remember "RIF" (reading is fundamental!)

What you posted should go without saying. I'm glad you said it, though, and said it very well.
I am hoping that as a fellow autistic fundamentalist, I will not be required to wear a leotard at any time. My kids are mortified enough by my current wardrobe choices...

After everything that happened to me at home at the hands of my Evangelical dad and stepmom and their friends, I've never welcomed more the opportunity to reclaim the word "fundamentalist".

Thank you for responding to philcommander's stupid-ass video about autism not being a real disorder.
I was so angry at him I was spitting nails!
It's been flagged for removal due to illegal acts. (His giving other parents medical advice without a medical degree.)

I just wish he were more understanding.
