Combating the Combating Autism Act
So today I go to check my email, and I have something from ASA, encouraging me to write to my senators regarding the Combating Autism Act. They even had a nice little form I could use! Oh how nice. Except I changed all the words, and of course lost them, so I can't post my improvements. Included among them are words like eugenics, genocide, parents don't speak for me, 90% of babies with Down's Syndrome are aborted and making another travesty doesn't make either less heinous, adults need supports and that costs less than the futile search for a cure, et cetera.
I then find out the link only works once. So my good friend Spockette wrote up a page for the Rettdevil site: Click here to write to your senators opposing the Combating Autism Act. We don't need ANOTHER war in this country.
Check it out, write your senators (or use the form letter that Spockette so kindly provided, which mocks the ASA one so well it's scary). Excuse any HTML issues, my host is hard to code for or something, since this time I had 2 experts (aka NOT ME) on the job and it's still taken 3 revisions. It should work, it just may not be as pretty as it could be.
Thanks for jumping in for autistic advocacy.

Kassiane, we don't want to parody the ASA form letter too closely because that could cause confusion. These letters are not actually going to be read by the senators. They'll be read by flunkies who sort them into "yes" or "no" and count how many of each are received. If we send letters that look too much like the ASA letters, they could be mistaken for "yes" letters.
If you're counting me as an expert... o.O
Okay so I am really confused. If you are autistic yourself then why are you opposing this act? I am a provider for a 5 year old girl who has autism. When I first started working with her her family was in debt because her mother had to quit work to b with her and the were paying me as well as two other providers out of pocket. This little girl had very few verbal skills when I firs started and now she only two years later she can pretty much hold an entire conversation. I accredit this to her early intervention. This act will help so many families like hers! It will provide funding for early intervention programs that have proven crucial for children like the little girl I work with!
With all due respect, k-mae, you clearly have met very few to no adult autistics. nor have you read this act.
1. We don't need government-sponsered war against us. It happens enough. Check out the murder and child abuse stats if you don't believe me.
2. The "centers for excellence" are total and utter CRAP. More proving what has been proven ad nauseum. We don't need to waste money on that.
3. ZERO provision for ADULT services. When that 5 year old grows up, she's still going to be autistic, no matter how conversational she is. And most of us DO need some degree of help that we aren't getting.
4. In case you didn't notice, we already have ONE war in this country. We don't need another one against fairly harmless people.
5. Prenatal research. Oh boy! There goes 90% of people like me!
Good enough for you?
